Save up to $350 on a used car with the Hertz military discount.
When Hertz wants to retire one of their rental vehicles, they turn around and resell it. These former rentals make up the vast majority of the used vehicles available via Hertz Car Sales. It’s a pretty genius idea and can provide stellar savings on a used car.
Current and former military members can claim an additional $350 off list prices by using promo code MILITARY at checkout.
TIP: Hertz doesn’t do haggling. They set their prices as low as they’re willing to go — which is always under Kelly Blue Book Value. Because there’s no negotiating involved, you know your $350 is a true discount. This is unlike other military discounts for car purchases, like the GM military discount for new vehicles.
Save up to 10% on Hertz rentals through Veterans Advantage.
You can join the Veterans Advantage program to get up to 10% off your Hertz rentals.
This program comes with a fee, though. If you’re already a member because you’re taking advantage of another program, like the American Airlines military discount, no sweat.
But if you’re not, there are tons of other ways to get even better military discounts on Hertz rental cars. And none of them come with an annual fee.

Get a larger military discount by booking directly through Hertz.
If you book directly through Hertz using their military and government worker program, you can get even more than 10% off.
I recently looked up rates for a Tesla for four days. The regular rate was $103.83/day. The military discount for leisure travel (not government-official travel) was $85/day, or 18% off.

But it’s still not as good as the ‘Pay Now’ discount for civilians.
Using the military discount this way is great — it’ll save you more on your car rental than the Veterans Advantage discount. But it’s not the lowest price you’ll see on a rental.
If you’re able to pay for your rental up front, you’ll get an even better rate by not using the military discount. The ‘Pay Now’ rate for that Tesla, which is open to civilians and service members alike, was just $70/day.
That’s a 33% discount, which saves you dramatically more money than the military discount on Hertz car rentals.
What is the USAA discount code for Hertz?
The USAA discount for Hertz is where things start to get really good. You’ll use promo code 77694 when booking your rental.
If you pay at the time of rental, it’ll be more expensive than the direct-to-you military discount than Hertz. Your 4-day Tesla rental would cost you $98.35/day. That’s a meager 9% in savings.
But the USAA discount code allows you to get lower prices on the ‘Pay Now’ feature, too. If you can pay for your rental ahead of time, the Tesla would cost you just $68.60/day. That’s 37% off, and the biggest discount we’ve found to date on Hertz rentals for military families.
The exact percentage of your discount may vary depending on when you’re renting, where you’re renting, and which vehicle you’re renting.
TIP: Sometimes there are additional discounts for USAA members. Be sure to check with USAA before you book, as there might be an additional promo code to use on top of the 77694 CDP.
Does Hertz check military ID?
Yes, Hertz is going to check your eligibility for the military discount. That may include asking to see a military ID at the time of rental or purchase. If you don’t have one in this moment, be sure to bring your DD-214 or some other proof of service.
Depending on how you secured your discount, they might not ask for an ID. For example, if you booked as a Veterans Advantage member, they already verified your identity and eligibility. You might not have to do it again.
If you booked as a USAA member, it may be as simple as providing your USAA number.
TIP: Have your documentation ready when you go to pick up any vehicle you purchase through the Hertz Car Sales military discount. In these instances, they’re known to check.
