Every year, Amazon Prime Day shows everybody why Amazon is the biggest player in retail with Prime Day, their summertime mega sale that's just for Prime members. In 2025, Amazon extended it from two days long to four days long. And for 2026, there's another change: Prime Day is moving from its usual July time slot to June.
During Prime Day, Amazon offers thousands of discounts, including a bunch of very popular Lightning Deals that pop in and out throughout the sale. Prime Day has become such a massive event that countless other retailers have tried to capture some of the magic with their own "Black Friday in July" summer sales (including the Walmart Deals Event and Target Circle Week).

Amazon Prime Day is an annual online sale that's only for Prime members.
Prime Day (which is now much more than a day) happens every year. For the past several years, it's been in July, but Amazon announced on April 29 that the sale is moving to June. Deals are usually geared at school supplies, tech, and summer clearance.
The first Amazon Prime Day took place in July 2015 as a way for Amazon to celebrate their 20th birthday, and it quickly became like a summertime Black Friday. The sale — which is exclusive to Amazon Prime members — has become the online shopping event of the summer, with so much participation and hype that plenty of other retailers try to capitalize on Prime Day by holding their own Black Friday in July sales around the same time.
Some of the best deals of the event are on electronics (particularly Amazon devices like Fire tablets or Echo smart assistants), but there are also big deals on home appliances, kitchen gadgets, apparel, beauty, and gift cards. Amazon's also expanded from tech and home to include groceries and even travel. In 2025, for example, Amazon partnered with Avis and Carnival to offer Prime members discounts on car rentals and cruises.
In 2026, Prime Day is taking place in June instead of July, but this isn't the first time.
We're still waiting on Amazon to confirm the exact dates, but we expect Prime Day to be four days, just like in 2025. Prime Day got its start back in 2015 as a 24-hour event, then went to 36 hours in 2018, to 48 hours in 2019, and then to four days in 2025.
And while a June Prime day is out of the ordinary, this actually isn't the first time Prime Day has moved outside of July:

In 2020 (during the COVID-19 pandemic), Amazon moved Prime Day to October. And it was successful enough that they launched an annual October sale (Prime Big Deal Days) in 2022.

In 2021, Prime Day took place in June. Amazon never explained why, but theories at the time suggested they were trying to avoid competing for attention with the Olympics.

In all other years, Prime Day has been in July.

Up to 50% Off Top Brands: Prime Day's a good time to get name-brand stuff. In 2025, Amazon offered 50% off Levi's and Shark; up to 40% off Bissell, Tarte, and Vans; up to 35% off Cosrx; and up to 30% off Kiehl's and Sunday Riley.

1. Keep your eyes on competitors during Amazon Prime Day.
Walmart and Target usually offer sales at the same time as Amazon Prime Day. They haven't announced yet whether they'll stick to their usual July timing for Target Circle Week or the Walmart Deals Event, or throw a sale in June. But it's always worth checking if Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, or any other retailer is offering the same product you’re eyeing on Amazon, and go with whomever has the best offer. Maybe Target has a Circle offer you can combine, or Walmart has it with same-day pickup.
2. Prime Day prices are probably low, but check CamelCamelCamel to be sure.
Don't buy anything on Prime Day without first making sure it's the lowest price Amazon offers.
