What Is the Dollar General Penny List?
The Dollar General Penny List is just a list of the specific items that will ring up for $0.01 at Dollar General this week (if you're able to find the items still on shelves, that is).
Penny items are actually mistakes. They're specific products that Dollar General has marked down to $0.01 so that store employees know to remove them from the shelves.
But sometimes employees miss pulling these items from the sale floor, and this leaves the penny items out on the shelf where customers can find them.
Typically these penny items have already been heavily discounted — usually by more than 90% — and Dollar General is having a hard time getting rid of the inventory.
KCL TIP: Dollar General penny markdowns usually happen on Tuesdays, so head to the store early every Tuesday to see if you can find them.
Want a heads up on what'll cost just a penny soon? Check out the items that are currently marked at 90% off. These deals might stick around for a week, or maybe a few weeks, before they drop down to just a penny.
The biggest thing to remember when penny shopping is to pay attention to the size, flavor, and count of the item you're looking for. Everything must match with what's listed on the current Penny List in order to get the $0.01 price.

Where Are Dollar General Penny Items in My Store?
Penny items at Dollar General aren't organized in one single aisle. Instead, you'll need to look throughout the store.
I have the best luck finding penny items in the clearance sections. But don't skip the normal-priced areas of the store. And according to one of our Dollar General deal hunting experts at The Krazy Coupon Lady, you might need to do a little digging.
"It's good practice to check the totes on the top shelves .... people hide stuff in 'em just before they penny so they can rack up. It's obnoxious, but I've learned to check and grab at 90% if I want the stuff!" — Sarah V., KCL staffer
Here's our quick cheat sheet on how to find penny items at Dollar General:
Things to Know About the Dollar General Penny List
1. Dollar General employees are technically supposed to sell you the penny items.
The Dollar General Employee Handbook states that employees should sell you items marked down to a penny. However, be aware that some stores might not let you buy these items when they scan for $0.01 at the register, even though the policy indicates they should. If this happens, you can gently remind the cashier about the policy. If they still refuse, kindly ask them to remove the penny item from your transaction.
2. Grab all the Dollar General penny items you can before you get to the checkout line.
Be prepared to get one shot to purchase the exact quantity you want. If you go to the register with just one item, this will alert the cashier to pull the rest off the shelf, and they might not let you buy it.
3. Whatever you do, don't ask employees to help you find penny items.
Please don't! Remember, these are items that the employees should have already pulled from the shelf. Don't even talk to the employees about the penny items. And please, please, please ... don't call corporate about a penny item situation.
4. Be aware of "Penny Resets."
Keep an eye out for "Penny Resets" at Dollar General. Items priced at a penny will stay that way until they get "reset." This happens when the item gets restocked at Dollar General, causing the system to revert the price back to full.
So if last season's items are still hanging around when the new season's stock comes in, they'll all jump back up to full price, which means no more $0.01 price tag.

5. Use the Dollar General app to check a penny item's price before going to the register.
You can use the Dollar General mobile app (iOS / Android) to price scan any items before you go to the register. Just be sure to check that your Dollar General app is the newest version available before you go into the store each Tuesday when the penny markdowns happen. And make sure you set your location to the store where you're shopping. This will ensure you're getting the most up-to-date prices.
There's not a separate Dollar General Penny List app, in case you were wondering.
KCL TIP: Some Dollar General registers aren't updating on Tuesdays to reflect the updated price. If your store has the new system or self-checkout, the prices may not reflect on Tuesday morning. Check back in the afternoon or on Wednesday.
