Keep these return policies handy when your shopping this holiday season!I have often felt buyer's remorse. Usually my remorse is not over that-thing-I-just-bought, but over how much I paid for it (and/or how it wasn't even a faint match for anything on my actual shopping list). When this occurs—and it occurs more frequently during the holidays because I shop more at that time—I sometimes decide to take the thing causing the remorse back for a refund. Luckily, during the holidays many retailers offer extended return policies to keep buyer's remorse and other common gift-giving issues in check. For this reason, I always like to know what a retailer's holiday return policies are before I shop with them—just in case.

Keep these policies handy when you’re shopping—some are definitely more generous than others!

1. Amazon

Holiday return policies:

  • All items shipped from November 1st – December 31st can be returned for a full refund through January 31, 2015.
  • This includes Amazon and all resellers who have Amazon stores (unless their individual policies specifically state otherwise).
  • Opened items may be assessed a restocking fee (read the fine print before purchase).

2. Costco

Holiday return policies:

  • There is no set deadline for returns at Costco.
  • The one exception is electronics—these must be returned within 90 days.

3. Walmart

Holiday return policies:

  • For customers who buy "limited return policy" items (such as "return within 15 days," for all items purchased between November 1st – December 24th), the limited return policy does not start until December 26th.
  • For all other items, customers have 90 days to return the item.
  • Receipts are not required to process a returned item for a full refund.

4. Target

Holiday return policies:

  • For customers who buy "limited return policy" items (such as computers and other electronics) for all items purchased between November 1st – December 24th, the limited return policy does not start until December 26th.
  • For all other items, customers have 90 days to return the item.
  • Receipts are required to process a returned item for a full refund.

5. Toys “R” Us

Holiday return policies:

  • Customers (online and in-store) can return any item (whether or not it was purchased within the previous 90 days) through January 22, 2015.
  • Receipts are required for a return.

6. Macy’s

Holiday return policies:

  • Macy's sets no deadline on returns—at any time of year (online or in-store)—with the exception of furniture (3 day return period) and mattresses (60 day return period).

7. Kmart

Holiday return policies:

  • Shoppers have 90 days to return most items—except pharmacy, special-order items, opened or damaged items.

8. eBay.com

Holiday return policies:

  • Since eBay is simply a collective of many individual shoppers with multiple listings, you must check closely to see whether the seller is enrolled in eBay's extended holiday returns policy.
  • For sellers who enroll, you will have until January 31, 2015, to return any item purchased on eBay.com between November 1st – December 31st.

9. Best Buy

Holiday return policies:

  • Since 2013, Best Buy has shortened its holiday return period from 30 to just 15 days—so all holiday returns must be processed by January 15, 2015.
  • The one exception is for customers who enroll in the My Best Buy program, which permits you to accumulate points, upgrade your status, and receive extended return times up to 45 days.

10. Zappos

Holiday return policies:

  • Zappos doesn't offer a specific holiday return program—this is because they give customers 365 full days to return any item for any reason! Wow.

11. QVC.com

Holiday return policies:

  • Any item purchased between September 20th – December 23rd at noon ET can be returned through January 31, 2015 for an exchange or refund.

12. Gap family of companies (Old Navy, Banana Republic, Piperlime, Athleta)

Holiday return policies:

  • Customers have a standard 45 days at Gap, Old Navy and Banana Republic. Swimwear must have hygiene tabs and tags. Sunglasses must have tags and case.
  • At Piperlime, returns must be processed within 30 days of purchase.
  • Athleta accepts returns anytime on any item.
