Spring merchandise hits retailer shelves way before the sun comes out. I’m talking February! But that’s OK, because you can take advantage of winter clearance sales which get pretty deep, since stores are under pressure to clear everything winter out.

So, while everyone else is pining for swimsuits and shorts, you can be saving huge money — up to 75% — on the stuff most people are sick of seeing: coats, boots, and mittens. I’ve even got a few tips for finding jeans, long-sleeves on sale, and ski tickets on sale!

Start watching for these sales in January, but don’t stop shopping for winter clearance until March gives up the ghost.

(Download the KCL app to keep on top of the clearance!)

Here’s how to do it.

1. Shop winter coat clearance during Dick’s Outerwear sale in March.

DICK’S Sporting Goods runs a weekend winter sale in January. Look for winter boots clearance, plus savings up to 75% on outerwear, snow pants, ski gear, and more.

And then in March, you can get 40 – 50% off brands like The North Face and Columbia when you shop DICK’S Spring Outerwear Sale.

Go ahead and outfit the whole family for next season.

TIP: Dick’s Sporting Goods will price match identical items at major retailers (like Target, Walmart, Nike, Macy’s, etc.). You can ask for a price match on a sale item, but they will not match a final-clearance-markdown price or a going-out-of-business-sale price.

2. Check out Macy’s winter clearance sale in January.

During this sale, grab fleece jackets, sweaters, long pants, and any other clothing items that you’ll need next year (or through the rest of this winter). You should save up to 30% easily. And then plan to shop Macy’s Last Act clearance section in March for the deepest discounts. It’s not uncommon to see toddler winter coats for $10.96 (reg. $75). But, you gotta hunt, because items are fairly picked over by this point.

TIP: Watch for UGGs to go on sale for up to 30% off at the end of January.

3. Buy kids’ coats during Old Navy’s Black Friday sale or December – February.

Old Navy runs winter clothing sales about once a month from November through February.

During November, shop Old Navy’s Black Friday deals because the entire store is 50% off. Stock up on everything cold weather — coats, gloves, scarves, hats, vests. Don’t buy puffer vests and jackets, though, because during December these reach almost 75% off and that’s when you should pull the puffer trigger.

And then in January and February you’ll find 40% markdowns on most outerwear as Old Navy tries to make way for spring.

4. Swing into Nordstrom Rack for their “Clear the Rack” event in February.

“Clear the Rack” events happen about every other month, so aim to capitalize on winter clothes clearance during the February sale. Try for 75% savings, but even 50% savings is awesome for brands the Rack carries.

You can find men’s winter coat clearance from brands like Tommy Hilfiger, along with clearance prices on long pants and long-sleeve shirts.

5. Don’t miss the REI Winter Clearance Sale in January — you can save up to 50%.

You know REI — it’s rare to see any new items for half off! But during January REI is very generous.

REI’s Winter Clearance Sale is the best time to buy outdoor gear for both winter and spring. Watch for deals on tents, sleeping pads, hiking boots, and more. Heck, this past January, REI offered 59% off ski lift tickets to Whitefish, Big Bear, and more! Spring skiing anyone?!

We also saw men’s winter boot clearance on brands like Keen.

6. Or shop REI in February – March for 30 – 40% savings on Columbia and more.

If you missed the REI Winter Clearance Sale, don’t worry: there’s still February and March!

Sure, discounts are smaller, but if you’ve been hunting for a pack and you see one you like for 30% off, snap it up — 30% off is nothing to be ashamed of at REI.

During this time, look for 40% savings on Columbia outerwear and discounts on brands like Patagonia, Helly Hansen, and more.

TIP: For expensive winter sports gear like skis, snowboards, and more, shop the REI Garage Sale. It typically happens in February or March, depending on your local store. Items are lightly used or damaged, but savings are deep — up to 70% in some cases.

7. Shop Kohl’s winter boot clearance and save up to 60%.

During January, Kohl’s offers a boot clearance you cannot miss.

Look for sale prices that reach 40% off along with a promo code to get an additional 20% off (like SLED20).

This sale doesn’t last very long, so download the KCL app and we’ll tell you when it’s happening next.

8. Look for red and yellow clearance tags on winter gear at T.J.Maxx in January.

T.J.Maxx doesn’t really do promotional sales, but they do offer a “clearance event” right after Christmas.

Plan to swing into the store around this time and paw through loads of newly marked down winter clearance items to find a treasure. Look for red tags (clearance pricing) and yellow tags (final clearance price) in order to save the most money.

9. Buy women’s clearance boots at JCPenney and save up to 80%.

Every January, JCPenney throws down a women’s clearance boots event to end them all. This is the time of year and the place you need to be buying ankle booties, riding boots, and whatever else you think you’ll want to wear when next fall shows up.

10. Grab kids’ hats, gloves, and coats at The Children’s Place in February.

The Children’s Place usually offers a winter clearance sale during February. Since selection dwindles the longer you wait, plan to buy right when the sale goes live. Sign up for The Children’s Place emails in order to find out the exact timing of the sale.

You’ll see winter accessories along with long-sleeve shirts and sweatshirts for up to 70% off.

11. Stock up on candles and winter scents during Bath & Body Works’ Semi-Annual Sale.

Shop Bath & Body Works’ Semi-Annual Sale in January for up to 75% savings on winter scents and $10 3-wick candles (reg. $24.50).

12. Get up to 60% off jeans, long-sleeve shirts, and lightweight jackets at American Eagle.

Plan to shop American Eagle in February when you can find loads of winter clothes on clearance.

Shop early for the best selection, and when you see $19.99 jeans clearance, stock up!

13. Grab anything you still need in March when you can get an extra 50% off sale prices at Gap.

If you still need anything for next winter — long sleeve shirts, sweaters, jackets, vests, hats, etc. — grab it in March when Gap rains down all the clearance and sales.

Generally, you want to shop Gap during extra 50% off clearance sales, but if you see that winter gear is sparse on the racks and you really want something, go ahead and buy at 40% off.

14. Get up to 60% off The North Face any time of the year at 6pm.com.

6pm.com is an online retailer owned by Zappos, which is a sister site to Amazon.

You can find thousands of brands at deep discounts. It’s often last season’s gear, but who cares? You can get some things for up to 90% off.

Discounts on The North Face hover around the 60%-off range more realistically. But hey, where else can you find that steep of a discount on TNF any time of the year?

TIP: Shop in February when 6pm.com runs an “extra 25% off clearance sale.”
