I just got back from a very expensive trip to the salon. It isn’t just the $200 I paid to get my roots done. It’s also the multi-hour time investment I put into the appointment.
I started dyeing my hair a few years ago when my grays became impossible to ignore, so taking care of my roots is important to me from a hiding-my-age perspective. But I can’t shell out $200 every six weeks for the upkeep. And it’s not like they’re overcharging — the hairdresser is providing quality work. But it’s one of those things where even if I technically could afford the frequent visits, all the frugal bones in my body keep me from doing it.
Recently I started looking for cheaper solutions to cover the gray at my roots in those between times. That way I can spread out my salon spending a little bit more.
You are not going to believe the deal I stumbled upon. I found this great volumizing color spray from Clairol on Amazon (Clairol Root Touch-Up Color + Volume 2-in-1 Temporary Spray if you want to get all technical about it). You can save 15% on it all week on Amazon.
Lemme show you how it’s done. Text HACKS to 57299 for even more deals and steals.
1. Subscribe & Save to get 5% – 15% off your Clairol 2+1 volumizing sprays.
Chasing away the grays in your roots is a constant battle. Since you’re going to need to replenish your Clairol 2+1 sprays anyways, you might as well partake in Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program.
You get to choose how often your Subscribe & Save order is delivered, which can be anywhere from every two weeks to every six months. If you purchase four items or less in your Subscribe & Save order, you get 5% off. If you purchase five or more items, you get 15% off.
That means you can knock the price down even further to $6.20 for Black or Medium Brown, and $7.64 for Dark-to-Medium Blonde.
TIP: Have commitment issues? Just because you place an item in your Subscribe & Save cart doesn’t mean you have to keep it there next month. So if you want to get the sale without regular deliveries, you can always change your mind before the next order is shipped.
2. There’s also a one-time 40% off coupon if you’re purchasing within a Subscribe & Save order.
The deals just keep going. Right now, Amazon is offering a 40% off coupon on Clairol 2+1 Spray. It’s a one-time coupon, but it only applies if you’re purchasing inside a Subscribe & Save order.
The coupon brings the prices down to $3.72 for Black or Medium Brown, and $4.58 for Dark-to-Medium Blonde.
To claim the coupon, you MUST click the button on the product page. Otherwise, it won’t be applied.
3. You’ll get an additional 5% off with the Amazon credit card.
If you’re purchasing with an Amazon credit card, you’ll get an additional 5% off your order. (And every other Amazon Prime order, for that matter).
That would make the new discounted price $3.53 – $3.95 for the Black and Medium Brown colors, or $4.35 – $4.86 for Dark-to-Medium Blonde.
At the end of the day, you’re saving more than half the original price depending on your color and how many items you have in your Subscribe & Save order. That’s some serious savings.
TIP: You only get 5% off if you’re a Prime member with an Amazon credit card. Otherwise, it’s 3% off.
4. Sign up for an Amazon credit card to get your first 10 bottles for free.
Don’t have an Amazon credit card? If you want to sign up for one, not only will you get the discount mentioned above, but you’ll also get a $100 Amazon credit. That’s enough to get you the first 10 bottles of Clairol 2+1 for free.
TIP: Credit cards aren’t a good choice for everyone. Only use them if you have the cash on hand to pay off your statement in full every cycle. Otherwise, you’ll pay bonkers interest rates and maybe even hurt your credit score. Here is how opening and closing credit cards impact your credit score.
5. Make sure you’re signed up for the cheapest Prime subscription.
To rake in the most savings with Subscribe & Save and the Amazon credit card, you’re going to need an Amazon Prime membership. And Prime memberships aren’t cheap! They start out at $14.99 per month, or $139 per year if you pay annually.
But there are ways to get a Prime membership for less if you’re eligible:
- Prime Student Membership: College students get Amazon Prime for just $7.49 per month.
- Qualified Government Assistance Membership: If you or someone in your household is on SNAP, Medicaid, or another government program, you can get Prime for $6.99 per month.
6. See a Target gift card deal on beauty or hair care? Amazon probably has one, too.
As you place future Clairol 2+1 Spray orders, there are ways to sniff out some potential deals, even though Amazon is a massive site.
For example, it’s a lot easier to stay tuned into Target gift card deals. These are those deals that give you a $5 gift card when you spend $25 on beauty products or something similar.
If you see an offer like this for beauty or hair care at Target, check out what’s being offered for Clairol on Amazon. A lot of times, they’ll run a special to compete with the Target deals. Here are some past examples:
- Spend $75, Save $15: Beauty & Personal Care
- Buy 2, Save $5: Various beauty products
- Spend $75, Save 5%: Beauty & Health
- Buy 1 Get 1 50% Off Personal Care

7. Get rebates on your Amazon purchases with Ibotta.
You can shop on Amazon through Ibotta so you can get rebates for your qualifying Amazon purchases.
For example, not too long ago Ibotta was offering a $2 rebate on Clairol 2+1 Spray. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a similar offer again in the future.
