Back-to-School is one of the best times of the year for couponers, and the only thing better than saving money is using that power to help others.
It’s why we share tips with you on The Krazy Coupon Lady — and it’s why for the past 5 years we’ve found the best Back-to-School deals to fill backpacks for as many Boise-area refugee kids as possible.
Our love (and backpacks) for these kids increased — 1000%!
Just 2 years ago, we bought school supplies for 50 kids — this year, we shopped for three-and-a-half weeks and were able to give out 500(!!!) backpacks.
It had only been a few weeks since we’d taken 100 of these awesome kids (back) to Build-A-Bear to let them pick out a new stuffed friend — but we missed them already.
So earlier this month, the KCL team spread out amongst the refugee housing communities and were able to personally hand out new school supplies.
The KCL team banded together to stuff the backpacks, assembly-line style.
We took a step away from our computers for a good chunk of a day and turned our break room into a Back-to-School factory as we filled the backpacks with paper, folders, scissors, writing instruments and a bunch of other stuff these kids will need.
We found school supply deals that were even better than our “buy now” stock-up prices!
We handed out more than 8,200 items in these 500 backpacks, and that’s in large part due to the awesome deals we were able to score, such as:
- College-ruled notebook paper for just $0.13 a package ($0.75 stock-up price)
- Pens for $0.03 each ($0.07 stock-up price)
- Scissors & 3-holed pencil pouches for $0.49 each ($0.50 stock-up price)
- 1-inch 3-ring binders for $0.87 ($1.00 stock-up price)
- Backpacks for just $3.00 each ($3.50 stock-up price)
We also matched quite a few of our stock-up price items, including colored pencils, markers and erasers ($0.50 each), and crayons ($0.25 each).
The best part? You can do it, too!
Couponing for a cause is pretty incredible, and it’s something anyone can do! Learn How to Donate Stockpile Items to Refugees. Keep tabs on our Stock-Up Price List to know what prices to watch out for, and then let the KCL app tell you when to buy. It can make a big difference!
