The kids are going back to school in a few short weeks, and we all know what that means: It’s back-to-school, stock-up time!

You’ll need two things before you even think about hitting the stores: Your KCL app and the KCL back-to-school stock-up list.

In fact, you can find everything you need in one place when you use the KCL 2017 Back-to-School deals page.

Here’s a quick list of items you should never, ever pay more than $0.50 for while back-to-school shopping this year:

1. Buy spiral notebooks at Walmart.

  • KCL stock up-price: $0.17 per 1-subject spiral bound notebook
  • Walmart price: $0.17 per 1-subject spiral bound notebook
  • Second best place to buy: Staples

Walmart consistently has the best deals on notebooks for back-to-school, with a price of $0.17 each (even without a coupon) in 2016.

Staples has matched Walmart for notebooks in past years, but this year Walmart is your jam, because their everyday low price is the stock-up price.

2. Buy Lysol disinfecting wipes and spray at Target.

  • KCL stock-up price: $1.50 for a 35 count container, or $0.04 per wipe.
  • Target price: $1.54
  • Second best place to buy: Walmart

August is the month to buy, and we see the lowest prices on Lysol at Target during the back-to-school frenzy. In past years we’ve seen $0.50/1 and $0.50/2 coupons for Lysol wipes, and even a hefty $1.00/1 coupon in 2015. Stack the manufacturer coupons with a Target gift card promotion to stock up.

In past years we’ve seen these wipes at Walmart for as low as $1.77, making it a solid second-place choice for stocking up.

3. Buy pencils at Staples
.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.05 for each #2 pencil
  • Staples price: $0.01 for an 8 count box
  • Second best place to buy: Target

Staples

‘ famous back-to-school deals win this one with prices for a package of Staples brand pencils reaching as low as $0.01 for an 8-count box of #2 pencils. Seriously.

Target is a close second; we’ve seen 8-count packages of #2 pencils come in at $0.20.

4. Buy crayons at Walmart.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.25 for a box of 24 generic crayons, $0.50 for a box of 24 Crayola crayons
  • Walmart price: FREE with ibotta rebate
  • Second best place to buy: Staples

WalMart already runs great deals on crayons — $0.25 for a generic box of 24 crayons before coupons. But this year we’ve seen them as low as free when paired with a “$0.25 off any item” rebate from Ibotta.

Staples comes in second place with prices as low as $0.22 for brand-name Crayola crayons.

5. Buy colored pencils at Staples
.

  • KCL stock-up price: $1.00 for a 12-count box of Crayola
  • Staples price: $0.45 for a 12-count box
  • Second best place to buy: Target

Staples

wins again with prices on Crayola colored pencils as low as $0.45 for a package of 12.

The next cheapest price we’ve seen for brand name was at Target, and it was still over the $0.50 mark for the same box of Crayola colored pencils, so hit Staples first and stock up.

6. Buy 2-pocket folders at CVS.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.10 each folder
  • CVS price: $0.10 per folder
  • Second best place to buy: Walgreens

Folders routinely go on sale for only $0.25 almost everywhere, even without coupons. But CVS is the clear winner, offering 2-pocket folders as low as $0.10 each in the past.

In case you don’t have a CVS near you, Walgreens is a solid second place at 6/$1 or $0.17 ea. in 2016.

Target is getting an honorable mention here as well, because even though their usual promotional prices aren’t as low as CVS and Walgreens, we’ve seen folders as low as free in the past.

7. “Buy” Elmer’s glue at CVS.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.50 per 4 oz bottle
  • CVS price: FREE
  • Second best place to buy: Walmart

I say “buy” because CVS has offered Elmer’s glue as low as FREE in past years.

Walmart comes in second place for buying glue: we’ve seen 4 oz bottles of Elmer’s as low as $0.07 ($0.01 per oz) multiple years in a row. I’m pretty sure I can dig a nickel and two pennies out of my pocket at that price.

8. Buy printer paper at Staples
.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.01 per package of 500 sheets with rebate
  • Staples price: $0.01 for 500 sheets
  • Second best place to buy: Office Depot

These are called “penny deals” or “loss leaders.” They are offered to customers in the hope that you’ll come in and spend more money on full-priced items. Staples

is famous for their deal on 500 sheets of all-purpose printer paper for $0.01.

Office Depot is a great second place choice; this year we’ve seen prices as low as $0.67 already. But seriously, Staples is the best by a long shot — hold out for the penny deal on paper, and stock up like crazy.

9. Buy erasers at Office Depot/Office Max.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.25 for each eraser
  • Office Depot/Office Max price: $0.01 for a 4-count package
  • Second best place to buy: Walgreens

Office Depot/Office Max has had penny deals on 4-count packages of pink eraser packages in the past, which is hard to beat. You could pick up a penny outside in the parking lot and buy one, seriously.

Walgreens has had the second best deals with 2-count packs of pink erasers at $0.25.

10. Buy scientific calculators at Dollar Tree.

  • KCL stock-up price: $6.00
  • Dollar store price: $1.00
  • Second best place to buy: Walmart

Scientific calculators can be a pricey addition to your back to school shopping, with even the cheapest calculator being well over the Dollar Store price of only…you guessed it…$1.00. This is by far the cheapest place to stock up on calculators.

Walmart takes a second place here with scientific calculators as low as $6.51, their everyday low price. Even paired with the recent $0.25 rebate on any item we saw from Ibotta that brought the price down to $6.26, Walmart still can’t beat the Dollar Store in terms of price.

11. Buy glue sticks at Walmart.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.25 each
  • Walmart price: $0.07 each
  • Second best place to buy: Dollar Tree

Last year we saw glue stick prices drop to as low as $0.10 per stick at Walmart, and this year we’re seeing prices as low as $0.07, both way below the stock-up price.

Dollar Tree gets second place with their eight pack of glue sticks at $1.00 ($0.12 per stick).

12. Buy ballpoint pens at Target.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.35 per package of 7 stick pens ($0.07 per pen)
  • Target price: FREE with coupon
  • Second best place to buy: Office Depot/Office Max

In past years we’ve seen prices as low as free at Target with a $1.00/1 coupon from Bic, and this year we’ve already seen prices drop to $0.24 for a package of 10 pens ($0.02 per pen). That beats our stock-up price by $0.11 per package, even without coupons.

Office Depot/Office Max takes second place. Yes, you got free pens after coupons last year, but unless we see another Bic coupon like the $1/1 we saw last year, Target is still your best bet.

13. Buy highlighters at Walgreens.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.25 each.
  • Walgreens price: $0.17 each
  • Second best place to buy: Target

Last year Walgreens ran a promo on full-sized Wexford highlighters at 6/$1, or $0.17 each! Target is in second place here but doesn’t quite make it under the $0.50 mark, so stock up at Walgreens.

14. Buy Sharpies at Staples
.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.25 per marker
  • Staples price: $0.19 per marker
  • Second best place to buy: Office Max/Office Depot

Last year we saw $0.25 deals on Sharpies at Office Depot/Office Max, and they set the bar for the stock-up price. That is, until we took that same ad to Staples

and used their 110% price match guarantee to score a 12 pack of Sharpies at only $0.19 per marker.

15. Buy scissors at Target.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.50 per pair of scissors
  • Target price: $0.45 per pair
  • Second best place to buy: WalMart

We consistently see scissors at Target for around $0.45 a pair, which is less than the KCL stock-up price. Don’t forget to check your Target app before buying anything, because the last time we saw prices drop that far was with a 5% off your purchase of Up & Up school supplies.

WalMart also runs promotions for $0.50 scissors during back-to-school season without coupons, so they’re a great second choice.

16. Buy Post-it sticky notes at Target.

  • KCL stock-up price: $0.40 per 90-count pad
  • Target price: FREE with coupon
  • Second best place to buy: Walgreens

Target wins by a landslide, with free sticky notes (after coupons) several years in a row.

Walgreens still comes in under the stock-up price at $0.39 per 90-count pad, but for real: just wait and stock up at Target.

17. Buy staplers at Dollar Tree.

Again the Dollar Tree is the clear winner here with staplers for only $1.00, well below the KCL stock-up price of $3.50. That’s a $2.50 savings without clipping a coupon!

Office Depot gets second place as they’ve also offered $1.00 staplers in past years, but only after a $5.00 minimum purchase, taking away from your savings’ bottom line.
