The Big Mac is turning 50, and to celebrate, McDonald’s is shelling out some serious coin for a pretty cool BOGO campaign.

Beginning at lunchtime on Aug. 2, the Golden Arches will start handing out “MacCoins” to customers who purchase a Big Mac — which may be redeemed for another Big Mac at a later date.

It’s gonna be bigger than BitCoin, trust me. Here’s what you need to know:

Buy a Big Mac, get a coin (for another Big Mac).

Starting Aug. 2 — the 100th birthday of Big Mac inventor Jim Delligatti — all you have to do is go into one of the 14,000 McDonald’s locations in the U.S., buy a Big Mac, and get a coin.

You can either exchange the coin for another Big Mac (starting Aug. 3) or . . .

Hang on to these coins, too — they’re collector’s items.

I mean, they’re REAL metal coins with legit engravings. Could turn into some real coin down the line (although for now, McDonald’s says you can’t auction or sell them).

There are only 6.2 million MacCoins — so act fast.

McDonald’s sold 1.3 BILLION Big Macs last year — that’s like 41 Big Macs every SECOND, so at that rate, the 6.2 million MacCoins supply will run out in about two days.

I’m going to guess Big Mac mania is going to ramp up, though, so you may have even less time to get your MacCoins. Don’t wait!

The coins represent the five decades of the Big Mac.

One side of the coin celebrates the 50th anniversary with a big 5-0; the other side has one of five designs, each illustrating a decade of the Big Mac.

The illustrations showcase flower power (’70s), pop art (’80s), abstract shapes (’90s), technology (’00s) and communication (’10s).

Get one free Big Mac per person, per visit.

Even if you want to buy three Big Macs, they’re only going to give you one coin for your purchase.

If you really want more than one coin (or Big Mac), you could either have your friends and family buy Big Macs for you, or you could visit other McDonald’s locations.

Just don’t expect to get multiple coins yourself from the same location on the same visit.

Cash in MacCoins by Dec. 31.

You’ll either need to trade in your MacCoins for free Big Macs by New Year’s, or you’ll have a great head start on a commemorative coin collection.

Use the McDonald’s app to order your Big Macs and get free food.

McDonald’s has been pushing its app hard, and for good reason. It’s easy to use and gives you tons of discounts and deals, from free Hash Browns to getting a Double Quarter Pounder with Cheese for $1.00.

I hate going into a busy McDonald’s, so I preorder my food, park in their specially marked parking spot, and have my food brought to me.

And this week, they’ll bring me a coin, too.

Save even more on your Big Macs by using a discounted McDonald’s gift card bought on Raise or Gift Card Granny.

While everyone else is getting MacCoins for buying Big Macs at regular price, I like knowing I’m even spending less by using a discounted McDonald’s gift card bought on Raise or Gift Card Granny.

Right now on Gift Card Granny, you can purchase a $50.00 McDonald’s gift card for only $45.00, a 10% savings!

Get a cheaper Big Mac by ordering a McDouble with Mac Sauce.

Once the MacCoins are gone, there are plenty of ways to save money on your two all-beef patties and special sauce.

For one, order a McDouble without ketchup or mustard, but with Mac Sauce and lettuce instead for no extra charge.

You might not get the middle bun found in the Big Mac, but you’ll only pay around $1.69, as opposed to the $3.99 you would pay for a regular Big Mac.
