Amazon’s In-Garage Delivery — which allows Amazon drivers to safely drop off packages inside a customer’s garage — launched in 2019 in just 50 cities. But as of November 12, 2020, Amazon announced its In-Garage delivery service will soon be available in more than 4,000 U.S. cities.
Here’s what we know about Amazon’s In-Garage Delivery expansion.

From New York to Farmersville, cities of all sizes will have access to In-Garage Delivery.
In-Garage Delivery originally launched in 2019 in select U.S. cities. But this month’s addition of more than 4,000 areas spans the rural-to-urban breadth of the U.S. New cities added range from small municipalities — including Magnolia, TX; Peachtree City, GA; and Casa Grande, AZ — to large metropolitan areas, like New York, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia.
Exact launch dates may vary per city; check your zip code to see if it’s In-Garage Delivery eligible.
In-Garage Delivery is part of the Key by Amazon program.
Key by Amazon was launched in late 2017 as a way to more safely and securely deliver packages to Amazon customers. Think: Instead of leaving your Amazon envelope or package out in a storm or too-hot sun, a delivery driver could access your trunk, house, or garage.
The in-home delivery portion of Key by Amazon has had mixed reviews and seems to be winding down, but the garage drop-off program has been quite successful — hence this enormous development.
You need to be an Amazon Prime member to use In-Garage delivery.
As with all Amazon Key programs, you must be a Prime member to use In-Garage Delivery. Keep in mind that you can always do a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime.
Plus, for a limited time, you can get a $30 Amazon credit using promo code KEY30 when you sign up for In-Garage Delivery.
You also need to download a special app and make sure your garage door is compatible.
Though this special Amazon feature is free for Prime members, you do need to make sure you have compatible devices for In-Garage Delivery to work. You can check to see if your garage door is compatible in the same spot you check your zip code eligibility.
According to Amazon, garage delivery should work with any garage opener made after 1993 with standard safety sensors. If your door/door opener isn’t eligible, you can buy a myQ Smart Garage Hub to retrofit your garage door.
You also need to download the myQ app, which allows you to control and check on your garage door remotely, as well as the Amazon Key app, and link the two. Then, to use In-Garage Delivery, you simply select that option when checking out on Amazon.com. The service itself is free.
Amazon also launched In-Garage Grocery Delivery (which is exactly what it sounds like).
The In-Garage Grocery delivery program is being piloted in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Seattle. Prime members can order from Whole Foods Market or Amazon Fresh and have groceries dropped right into their garage.
Be sure to take advantage of the $20 Amazon credit for first-time In-Garage Grocery Delivery users (only valid for a limited time).
You can watch the delivery in real time using your home smart cameras.
It can be a little disconcerting to let someone into your home (even if it is into the exterior garage). This is why many have also linked their smart home cameras to the service as well.
There are a few different cameras that work with In-Garage Delivery: You can link your Amazon Cloud Cam — which comes with the Smart Garage Hub package — to control access to your garage. The Ring smart home camera (owned by Amazon) and LiftMaster Smart Garage Camera (via myQ) — both of which require a video storage subscription — are also compatible with In-Garage Delivery.
